Haunted History Many fatalities are rumored to have happened on the train tracks in or around the tunnel and tressels crossing Raccoon Creek, with the latest being that of a 10 year old girl in 1985. More than one ghost are rumored to haunt the area, mainly around the old tunnel. The spirits include that of a train conductor who was rumored to have been walking the tracks drunk one night and was hit by an oncoming train (sighted as early as the 1890's), an apparition of a woman wearing a white dress who is said to have been hit in or around the tunnel in the early 1900's, a miner who is said to have been struck by a train in the 1920's while walking home after a night of revelry in town (described as a large black man wearing miner's clothing), a young man in his twenties who was waiting for a train to pass one night and hit when half of the train became uncoupled. Some people say that some nights you can see the conductor swinging his lantern in hopes of stopping the train. As you can see, the area has a horrific past. | What is Moonville Tunnel?
Moonville was a small train town that sprung
up around the 1850's located around what is now known as the Zaleski National
Forest in Southern Ohio (about 15-20 miles west of Athens, Ohio.) The town itself was not very big (maybe a couple shops, one post
office, one schoolhouse etc.) and the population of the town never
reached anymore than 100 people. The last family left town in the mid to late 1940's and all that remains is the old train
tunnel and the Moonville Cemetery. The tracks running through the tunnel were originally part of the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad (M&C). In 1887, M&C became Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) and later merged with Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O) and Western Maryland Railway (WR) to become Chessie System. CSX ran it's last train through Moonville Tunnel in August of 1985 and the tracks were pulled up in 1988. (railroad information source: wikipedia.com) ![]() |

EVP Dialogue Verbatim Audio Equipment Used: RCA Digital Voice Recorder - RP5120 (Chris) **Speakers must be turned up to hear this audio file clearly.** | Chris' analysis on the audio clip...
Honestly, I wish I could give a definite answer on what I hear but I find that the sound is very unclear. I don't really hear words from it, but moreso just the sound from it....almost like a cry or something. I have gotten more articulate EVP's up at Moonville Tunnel where you could make out words (these were on investigations BEFORE I joined APRT), but never anything like this. So on this clip, I am just dumbfounded as to what it is....but I can assure you it was no sound that I made, no sound that the other APRT members made, nor any animal or creature. Definitely something "paranormal" or possible spirit/ghost activity if you ask me. Cassie's analysis on the audio clip...
I can honestly say that while this EVP work was being done the tunnel was unsettlingly quiet. This was no audible response to us as Chris was asking questions. In my opinion it does sound like a high pitched voice parroting the word "cemetery". |
