Haunted History The legend of Elisabeth (as many other local ghost legends) has many different specifics and has no concrete origin associated with it. The three most popular versions of the Elisabeth legend involve the large, ominous tree near the back of the cemetery in which Elisabeth is said to have been hung or have hung herself. One legend goes that Elisabeth was a widow whose husband had died a few years prior to her hanging. Some local men were angered that she inherited her husbands land and hung her from the tree. Another legend goes that Elisabeth was a young woman who was to be married to a man her parents had forbidden her to marry. Overwhelmed with the fact that her parents forbid her to marry the man, she committed suicide by hanging herself from the tree. The last legend was that Elisabeth was a witch and was hung from the tree by townspeople. | What is Elisabeth's Grave? Elisabeth's Grave is located at the Mount Union-Pleasant Valley Cemetery not far from Chillicothe, Ohio. It is unknown which burial plot holds the remains of the cemetery's resident ghost "Elisabeth" because of the horrible vandalism and desecration. Many of the headstones of the people buried in the Mount Union-Pleasant Valley Cemetery are broken completely off and about 10-12 headstones have been tossed in the back corner at the edge of the woods. A hole has been dug in front of the base of a headstone with the top of the headstone placed in the hole. A tree has fallen in the middle of the cemetery and looks as if it has been laying there for quite some time.
